PunkCDSampler started with the youtube channel. Just one of my brilliant 13-year old ideas on how to kill time. The idea was to eventually become a partner and make shitloads of money. Then I would buy a car for all of my friends and we’d all live in a huge party mansion. At least this was my plan for about a year, until I realized that it probably wasn’t going to happen, and if it did, it would probably be more trouble than it’s worth. Regardless, I still loved putting albums on youtube and even doing podcasts. The podcasts went first. I still make one just for fun every now and then, but I’m no longer on a schedule.

The youtube page went strong for about a year and a half. Then I started taking long breaks and really only uploading interviews most of the time. What happened? I started a radio show. Whole lotta fun, and I no longer cared about youtube. It seemed so juvenile and pointless.

So where am I now?

  1. I don’t give a shit about schedules so don’t expect an album/week anymore.
  2. I will probably not upload or listen to your shitty band.
  3. I’m no longer taking requests.
  4. I’m only going to upload music I like and care about.

Okay.

Well, thanks for voting. I got a good number of votes, and the results:

are exactly what I wanted. Just wanted to make sure none of my regular listeners would be too upset.

Also, I’ve started a calendar where I’ll put the dates of my live shows. There’s also an RSS feed. Don’t know how to subscribe to an RSS feed? Neither did I until 30 minutes ago. If anyone knows a better way leave a comment.

  1. Get an account at http://www.bloglines.com/
  2. Click Add inside bloglines.
  3. Enter http://punkcdsampler.com/Forum/index.php?/rss/calendar/1-live-show-calendar/
  4. Enter your preferences.
  5. Go to http://www.bloglines.com/about/notifier?tip=2 to choose how you prefer to be contacted about new shows.

Also, the RSS feeds only update once a day, so updates I make to the calendar won’t be seen immediately.

I used to do polls every few weeks. Well, here’s a new one:

Should interview videos have an under 30 second ad before the video starts?
Yes, I wouldn’t mind it.
Yes, I would mind it, but if it helps you to make money then I guess it’s ok.
No, I would watch the video, but I would be angry because of the ad.
No, I wouldn’t watch the video.

So, let’s say I’ll wait until Monday and I’ll go with whatever side has more votes. Sound fair? Cool. Read the rest of this entry »

Thought I’d take some time to give shoutouts to some of my favorite podcasts and radio shows. You know, those guys that do their best to convince me that I will never be as good as them and I have no business running a radio show.

Burrito Electrico

Burrito Electrico. A while back, when I still enjoyed doing the podcasts, the guy who runs this show, SnyderMan, emailed me and told me he enjoyed the show. Which is weird, because he has his own show and should be able to see how awful that podcast was.

Punknews Podcast

Sure, they only have 1 episode out, but it’s good. Really good. In fact, I’m rocking out to it right now. Apparently punknews accounts for something like 8% of my site’s traffic, so I feel like I owe them something. Maybe I should get those interviews I promised over to Rich.

…maybe some other time.

All Ages Radio

Wow, way to not have promo images readily available. I almost skipped you guys, despite how awesome you are. Seriously though, listen to these guys. They’re the only people on this list on the “real radio”, but I won’t hold that against them. Okay, I will. A little.

That’s it for shoutouts. Honestly, I don’t listen to many other podcasts and radio stations, but when I do I usually get the urge to make a new podcast of my own. So thanks for the motivation! Returning the shoutout is always welcome.

The Fest 9

Want a press pass for The Fest? Of course you do. Here’s the details:

I want someone to go to The Fest with a video camera (it can just be a digital camera or Flip cam if that’s all you have)  and film some bands. Not whole sets, but try to get a song or two from all the bands you see. Take pictures, too.

And when the day is over take a video of yourself talking about the previous day. Talk about the bands you saw, stuff that went on, the weather, w/e you think is important!

These videos will be edited and uploaded to my youtube channel and website! Here’s how to get the press pass:

Take a video of yourself talking about a recent show or festival you went to and send it to matt@punkcdsampler.com ! It should ideally be between 5-10 minutes. Try to get the best quality possible. I’ll pick the best video and that person will get the press pass. Which means you don’t have to pay for a ticket for The Fest! And you get to do all that journalism stuff, too. The deadline for sending in your videos is 11:59 pm Saturday July 17.

Mic Set-UP

Let me explain what you are seeing here: MXL 3000 micorphone on a stand I made out of legos. Connected to an ART Preamp via XLR cable. The preamp is connected to the computer via a 1/4″ to 1/8″ cable I found at RadioShack. The pop filter is screwed into the table. The table is a small folding table. Over it is a blanket to help with sound. The blanket is held up by my old binder, which is held in place with two push-pins.

Yes. This is how DIY and awesome the show is. I recently got  a coupon for Musician’s Friend, which I spent on a real mic stand and a better cable to connect the preamp to the computer.

So next time you’re wondering why it takes me so long to prepare for an interview, consider this: I have put this together every time I want to use the mic, and take it apart when I’m done.

These guys have long been one of my favorite bands. It was an honor to interview Ryan.

They may not want to put it up, but I’ll be fucked if I ain’t.

The band Protagonist, on Paper +Plastick, were recently stolen from in Oklahoma. If they do not recover what was stolen or get more money quickly, it is unclear whether they will be able to afford to continue making music. Please read this and help them out:

We’re all a little scatter-brained and shocked right now so I don’t even know where to begin, but our trailer was stolen off of our van sometime between 5-7:30am this morning from a Days Inn Airport Hotel/Denny’s parking lot last night in TULSA, OKLAHOMA. The van was parked right side of our hotel room in a very well lit parking lot that the hotel shares with a Denny’s Restaurant. That lot is where the hotel asked us to park it, and the staff at the 24-hour Denny’s told us the van would be safe there as well. But we were wrong. The pin lock was somehow removed, the chains were cut, and no trace of the trailer was left behind. We drove 18 hours straight from Florida to Tulsa,OK to record with Stephen Egerton. We were supposed to start early this morning hence pulling into town yesterday evening.

The thief made away with all of this:
